I'm the office administrator for a 230-person manufacturing company. Bottom line: don't buy an instrument the way you'd buy a phone charger. The knowledge, calibration trail, and support behind a purchase are part of the product itself. Spend accordingly, and keep the savings for the stuff that truly doesn't matter.
